Mood boards and the branding process

A mood board is a visual collage of different elements which aims to communicate a feeling. It’s a really important tool in the branding process, as it helps to showcase a visual style and agree on a creative direction.

Branding is a collaboration between the founder and the brand expert, so the mood board helps to bridge the gap between language and visuals. It shines light on the path to the right branding and it gives inspiration nuggets to the brand designer.

There is no such thing as a bad mood board, but there are a few components that are important to include such as:

  • Photography style

  • Illustrations (if that’s your bag)

  • Fonts

  • Colours

  • Textures

By gathering all of these elements in one place you can start to get the experience of the brand that you’re creating and know if you’re on the right track.
